1.53 Glass Lenses are traditional-made crown glass lenses with a refractive index of 1.53,  known for their superior optical clarity and scratch resistance, making them a good choice for normal prescriptions and full-frame glasses. However, they are heavier and less impact-resistant than newer plastic alternatives like Trivex, which also has a 1.53 index but offers better durability and is lighter weight.

Key features of 1.53 index glass lenses:

  • High optical clarity: Glass material provides exceptional vision quality for those with normal prescriptions.
  • Scratch resistance: They are naturally more resistant to scratches from grit and other materials than plastic lenses.
  • Best for full frames: Due to their physical properties, they cannot be used in semi-rimless or drill-mount frames.
  • Weight: They are heavier than most other lens materials, which can cause discomfort over long periods.
  • Impact resistance: They are not impact-resistant, making them unsuitable for certain safety glasses or children's eyewear
  • If you have a normal strength prescription you should consider glass lenses.  They provide the best performance out of all of the lenses.  If you worry about scratched lenses and are looking for the highest quality optical clarity, 1.53 index glass lenses are for you.

1.60 High Index Glass Lenses are a type of eyeglass lens that is thinner and lighter than standard glass lenses, suitable for mild to moderate prescriptions (around +/- 3.00 to +/- 5.75 diopters).  They are a good choice for people who want a more comfortable, aesthetically pleasing look because the higher index of refraction means less material is needed, resulting in thinner and less bulky lenses.

Key characteristics of 1.60 high index glass lenses:

  • Thinner and lighter: Compared to standard 1.53 index glass, 1.60 index lenses are approximately 20% thinner and lighter, providing better comfort and a more appealing look.
  • Prescription range: They are an excellent option for mild to moderate prescriptions, typically from  +/- 3.00 to +/- 5.75 diopters.
  • Optical clarity: 1.60 lenses offer good optical quality and a high Abbe value (around 44), which means there is less color distortion and sharper vision compared to some other materials like polycarbonate.
  • Durability: They are durable, with high impact and thermal resistance, and offer the natural scratch resistance of glass.
  • Appearance: The thinner profile helps to minimize the magnifying or minifying effect on the eyes, making them look more natural.

1.70 High Index Glass Lenses are eyeglass lenses made from glass with a refractive index of 1.70, which is a material engineered to bend light more effectively, resulting in thinner lenses than standard glass. They are a good option for people with strong prescriptions for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, as the increased index of refraction allows for a more compact lens design, leading to improved comfort and aesthetics.

Key characteristics of 1.70 high index glass lenses:

Thinner and lighter: The higher refractive index allows for less lens material to achieve the same prescription, making them lighter and thinner than standard lenses.
  • For strong prescriptions: These lenses are especially beneficial for people with high refractive errors, typically those with prescriptions stronger than +/- 6.00, to reduce the "coke bottle" effect of thick lenses.
  • More reflective: Being a glass material with a high index, these lenses are more reflective than standard lenses, so an anti-reflective (AR) coating is highly recommended to reduce glare and improve clarity.
  • Comfortable: The reduced weight makes them more comfortable to wear, especially for extended periods, and helps prevent them from sliding down the nose.
  • Aesthetics: They provide a more natural look by minimizing the magnification or minification of the eyes and sitting closer to the face.

1.80 High Index Glass Lenses are thin eyeglass lenses with an ultra-high refractive index, designed for very strong prescriptions.  This high index glass with a refractive index of 1.80, which is a material engineered to bend light more effectively, resulting in thinner They are one of the thinnest available glass lenses, are highly scratch-resistant, and offer excellent optical clarity, but they are also heavier than plastic lenses, more brittle, and prone to glare without an anti-reflective coating.

Key characteristics of 1.80 high index glass lenses:

  • For strong prescriptions: These lenses are ideal for individuals with high prescription powers, as they significantly reduce the thickness and weight of the lenses.
  • Thinner: They use more light-bending material to achieve the same prescription in a thinner, lens compared to standard options.
  • High optical clarity: They offer excellent optical quality and clarity.
  • Aesthetic benefits: The slim profile makes for more cosmetically appealing eyeglasses, especially when compared to bulky, thick lenses for strong prescriptions.
  • Scratch resistance: Glass lenses are naturally more scratch-resistant than plastic, but because these are so thin and brittle, they should be handled with care and are not recommended for sports or children.
  • Glare: They are more prone to light reflection, so an anti-reflective coating is highly recommended to improve clarity and vision.
  • Cost: They are more expensive than conventional lenses due to the advanced materials used.
  • Frame compatibility: Because they are thinner and stronger, they are best suited for full-rimmed frames that are smaller in size and round or oval frame shapes.

1.90 High Index Glass Lenses are the thinnest eyeglass lenses with an ultra-high refractive index, designed for very strong prescriptions.  This high index glass with a refractive index of 1.90, which is a material engineered to bend light more effectively, resulting in thinner They are the thinnest available lens available.

Key characteristics of 1.90 high index glass lenses:

  • If your main desire is thinness, there are no thinner lenses than 1.90 high index.
  • 1.90 high index lenses are only available in glass. Currently, no plastic lens materials reach an index of 1.90.
  • 1.90 is a particularly dense glass material, so the lenses are going to be considerably heavy. If you are planning on ordering 1.90 high index lenses, it’s a good idea to look for a frame with the smallest lens size possible to reduce the weight.  They also look much better in an oval or round frame shape.
  • 1.90 high index lenses are going to be more expensive than any other lens material.
  • 1.90 high index lenses are generally only available for single vision or progressive prescriptions.
  • Abbe number refers to color aberration, which is the amount that your lens blurs edges and colors, especially in your peripheral vision. Aberration causes things like “color bleeding,” where it seems like a rainbow is peeking out from behind the edge of an object. 1.90 high index lenses generally have the lowest Abbe number of any lens (between 20 and 35), leading to the most (worst) color aberration.
  • Because of its low Abbe value, 1.90 high index is a poor choice if your prescription has prism.
  • 1.90 high index lenses cannot be tinted and are generally only available in clear.
  • Because of their thinness, these lenses are extremely good at getting rid of the “bug eye” and “tiny eyes” look that’s associated with strong prescriptions.
  • 1.90 high index lenses are most useful for extremely high prescriptions.

These lenses aren’t right for everybody, and most people who go with high index lenses prefer 1.70 high index glass because of the optical clarity and cost. If thinness is extremely important to you, your prescription is extremely high (below -10.00 or above +7.00), you are very concerned with having as little of the “bug eye” or “tiny eyes” look as possible, you do not have a prism, and you are comfortable with dealing with color aberration, 1.90 may be the lens for you.
